Yahoo Groups are great for getting new visitors

I am really loving Yahoo groups for gaining quality traffic. These groups are just a treasure trove of focused individuals who are obsessed about one topic or the other. Even better most of these guys are natural sharers to quality sites. If you can make some sort of link bait that appeals to a group they will distribute your link far and wide which will lead to your site being discovered by another Yahoo group.. and another and another until you run the gamut of the niche your site is in.

Is working very well for the adult stuff I have… you might want to try it.

Dot TV may as well be Dot UFC

If you are into the web and into fighting you probably noticed this already. Anything UFC related, be it fighters, equipment, or gyms is on the dot tv top level domain.  What a huge investment in a crappy domain extension. Obviously if you have the money the UFC has you can register anything and market it just fine but what about the fighters and gyms? These guys are buying their brand.tv thats a mistake in the long run. For the average user dotCom is the internet and always will be. Building your brand on a site that people won’t find when they type in the dotCom is a tragedy.

Search reporting… what a bunch of crap

So off I went for a few monthes doing my own thing sick of the repetitive search community I finally decided to check back in and what did I find. Crap.

Nothing has changed.. same stories as last year and the year before. Same famous seo’s regurgitating everyone elses news and scraping forums to steal topics. Same newb “search professionals” (hahahaha) repeating the latest Copyblogger mantra and a few clever ones reporting old ones with some twist. Same 8 steps to increasing your conversions… Same Microsoft should or will buy Yahoo… Same Same Same

What garbage, what crap, so many smart individuals writing shit so they can be King of the Echo Chamber.

Yuck.

Cat Post

I adopted a cute kitty from Cat Rescue a little over a year ago. It was so sad we saw her in her cage at half price. I knew that if she was half price there was a problem. Even more alarm bells should have gone off when we found out she had been with the organization for a very long time. She was unwanted because (I assumed) because she was so old. I have a soft heart for cats and wanted to give her old bones a home. I brought her sweet face home. my son super excited, and my wife reluctant but quickly won over. We were in heaven… are good deed done.

Then she had explosive diarrhea on the floor, wiped her poopy ass all over, and as a coup de grace sprayed in 3 of my floor vents. Turns out she was one very sick kitty and had been for sometime. A few thousand dollars and a year later she’s better but not 100% and the vet says she’ll never be. According to the vet she is going to use my kitchen floor as a place to wipe her ass until she dies. This just isn’t a simple scoot across the floor. When she’s done with my floor you’d swear a drag race event just took place.

She’s a pretty kitty with a sweet demeanor but she has got to go. My house is not a barn.

How do you explain that to a seven year old boy who loves her though? This is going to be a tough life lesson for my son about no win decisions in crappy situations.
Thanks Cat Rescue

Improved PHP Template class from phpBB

I have been using template engines for year and years with php. I have tried a multitude of template engines and found most of them bloated especially Smarty. Seriously Smarty sucks.. one you start adding logic to your templates you have totally missed the point of having a template in the first place. If thats the route your going to go then just use php and includes for christ sakes, theres no need to invent a new programming language. Anyways I digress…

The one engine that I like the most is the template engine that shipped with phpBB 2. Its simple and does the job. Apprently the guy who wrote it copied a lot from phplib so if you are familiar with that one you should be familiar with this one. The one thing that was missing from it was the ability to cache compiled templates.

I fixed that a long time ago and never bothered to share it.  You can download the class here.

A few notes…

  • The constructor takes arguments for where the cache directory is and whether or not your going to use caching.
  • The cache directory needs to be writable by the webserver
  • Along the way I updated it to use php 5 conventions.
  • Remember you can use any directory… it doesn’t have to be in the directory that gets served.
