Holy cow, MySQL is going to be acquired by SUN!
Now that a large corporation is the face of MySQL hopefully they will get respect.
I have been involved in web development for the military since 1999 and opensource platforms have always been frowned on. If its not possible to buy it in a shiny box then we don’t want it is the prevailing attitude. The “powers that be” are always reluctant to invest in things that don’t have a way to get traditional support from a company. Furthermore the US government has been stuck on the Microsoft treadmill for 20+ years thats a whole genereation of workers who know nothing else. Combine those two facts with tendency of large organizations to resist the new and its easy to understand why my advocation of MySQL has failed.
With a new owner that has experience doing business with the government for years hopefully squeezing the Big Boss to allow me to use MySQL will be easier.
