I hate the idea of cell phones. People look at me as if I am from Mars when I say I have no cell phone. I feel the same weird sense of disgust when I see them hen pecked by work via the collar of a cell phone. I mean really who wants to always be available to everyone? I certainly don’t, at least that’s what I thought until I had a son. So with that in mind I grudgingly decided to finally buy a cell phone.
I also hate carrying around million things in my pockets and I also wanted to get an mp3 player. Since there was no way I am going to wander around with a Batman type utility belt I searched for phones that doubled as mp3 players. I asked around and my various friends, forums, and cell phone fetishist all informed me I needed a Sony Ericsson or a Nokia for the best reception. That automatically rules out the popular Razr phones, after I read the CNET reviews I am ok with that. Also on the CNET site I discovered the Sony Ericsson w810i which had pretty good reviews as did most of the Walkman series of phones by them. I kept looking but I came back to the 810 since it seemed to have the best features and reviews. So I went and bought it off Amazon.
The Ericsson 810 lets me listen to my podcasts now anytime and anywhere I want. For the last week I have been listened to four hours of Shoemoney, eight hours of of DaveN & Mikkel, about six hours of Rockstars, untold hours of GoodRoi, and every Search Cast for the last month. All that from one device amazing to ma at least! The phone will hold up to two gigabytes with the largest memory card you can get. Another bonus is that the phone supports mp3 and doesn’t force me to worry about digital rights. I have moved into the media on demand revolution ( a few years late admittedly ) and will never look back.
There were a couple of minor issues with the mp3 player though. The controls are pretty easy to use but it irks me there is no way to jog the audio forward. I have to hold down the fast forward button to skip past commercials or to rewind to figure out what the hell DaveN just said. Another problem is that the volume control also doubles as a skip forward to the next track button. That has lead to me losing my spot in a podcast a few times when I fat finger raising the volume. This is a really minor issue but when you have no quick way to jump back into the middle of a show its aggravating. Since I have gotten used to the controls more though its happened less and less. The data transfer rate between the phone end my computer was slow for my taste as well. All in all I can live with these problems, they are pretty minor.
When I am not listening to the media I want to when I want to there are other options for me too. The phone has an internal FM radio that gets better reception compared to my original office radio. Then there are games for those special times in the stall and for my son on long trips ( saved him some boredom on a trip to Baltimore this weekend) . While I am not listening to NPR or GoodKarma I can browse the web as well. The browser holds up real well but it is definitely odd having an ittybitty screen and typing on the phone is a chore. I hope they come out with a clamshell version next to make that easier, but I am happy with it as it is. Furthermore it comes with a two mega pixel camera which I am really enjoying having on me to take snapshots of my boy.
Turns out despite my reservations the Sony Ericsson 810 is the best damned thing I have purchased in 3 years.
