As an affiliate, publisher and frequent blog reader its difficult to block advertisements with out hamstringing my own efforts. I like to block ads to prevent me from clicking on my own by accident and improving my own user experience as I use the internet. To block ads I use the ad block extension for Firefox. The filters are easier to configure on the fly than other methods ( most notably Norton Internet Security ) which is important since I need to be able to see the ads when I choose too. Should you need to see ads for editing your sites, you can either white list your site or temporarily disable the Adblock extension. Using this tool and my filter list I have surfed a virtually ad free internet for months and learned a bit about how to deal with users using ad blocking (more on that later this week).
If you’d like to use my filter list, one that won’t lock you out of your publisher accounts you can download it here. After you install it go to the Preferences section of the Adblock tool. Then select Adblock Option -> Import Filters and select the filter list file you just downloaded. When prompted select “Replace” ( unless you have your own filter in which case its your call ) .
Viola, Your done and no more ads !
