Forking PHP Links Directory.. new PHP Web Directory

PHP Links Directory is a wonderful open source product put together by the people over here. The project has stalled though as the 3.0 version is only available for a paid fee. This is an unfortunate development for many, I know that many hobbiest webmasters are still using the 2.0 version and don’t have the cash to upgrade.

I want to keep this project free.

So in the great tradition of open source projects I am forking from the PHP Links Directory 2.0 code and going to be offering support and upgrades for the project free of charge.

More to come at Php Web Directory in the next few weeks.

That’s cool and congrats but I don’t understand the motivation.

Sure, free stuff is great and having a free script is helpful to many webmasters.

But the price is a mere $25. I have serious concerns about the long term viability of a directory for which $25 is a major cost. How long can such a directory last? How can such a directory promote itself?

$25 just isn’t much in the scheme of things. If David had raised the price to $500 or something, your project would make a lot more sense to me.

Its simple, the motivation is to have a free directory script available for people to use.

I’m glad to see someone making an attempt to fork this project. I’ve only recently started using the 2.0 version of php link directory, and while it seems to have been the best GPLed link software out there, I was disappointed to see that the developers were adopting a closed source model. If you’re serious about doing this, please keep us updated on your progress, I’d certainly be interested in helping out in some way.

I see this fork/project went quiet. If anyone else is looking for a GPL link directory script, come and try emLinks. We are about to go beta. It is not related to phpLD, but actually based on the code from Jade2.
