What I learned from Monte Cahn

Webmaster Radio is a recent addiction of mine. I find the shows focus on subjects that are relevant to me. Nearly every show I have listened to so far has been great, but one has stood out amongst them, Domain Masters.

Domain Masters is a show about business topics that concern domainers. Domainers are an odd group of webmasters that speculate on the value of domains, trade them as commodities, and find other creative ways to monetize them. The domain business is an interesting back alley in the already obscure business activities many of use webmasters participate in.

When I first started listening to the program it was interesting because it sheds light on areas of business that I don’t know much about. Slowly though I noticed something else capturing my attention. The upbeat way Monte spoke and the consistent messages across the shows in the archive all added up to something but I wasn’t sure what.

Then the realization of what I was noticing hit me like a brick. Monte isn’t just reporting about the domain business, he is preaching its virtues as well. Monte Cahn is trying to advance the industry as a whole in an effort to increase his business. He has made me like what is effectively an infomercial for the domain buiness.

What did he do to get me to like infomercials ?

  1. Pick a core message or two before launching your show/site/blog before hand and do not deviate from them. Illustrate how things on your show/blog/website prove your points. Monte has two themes they are ( in my words ) “This is why this is a business and domains are worthwhile assets” and “That would never happen at Moniker we’re the Fort Knox of domain registrars”.
  2. Always stay upbeat. Monte laughed at tons of things you would have expected him to be upset about
  3. Never diss your competitor, I have never heard Monte do this once in the 10 or so hours of him I have listened to so far. Even his employees don’t do that when I bitch about GoDaddy to them, in fact they stood up for GoDaddy.
  4. Relevent. The information on the show is relevent to me and the business its discussing. Unlike Tony Little screaming on his Gazelle the things that Monte presents are helpful and really are news for me.

Monte Cahn has been an invaluable teacher to me. His upbeat attitude on the industry is real. He acknowledges that he has competition and presents his registrar service and parking pages as one of many options. His guests are top notch and have encouraged me to work on my domains. I would not have built the Teachtopia.com network without listening to his show.

Thanks Monte!!

Monte’s advice has helped me a ton, it’s really appreciated. Too bad somebody stole montecahn.com =( He needs to make a personal blog, if he doesn’t have one somewhere else (can’t find it on Google).
