I attended my first webmasterworld conference last week and have finally had some time to recover and reflect. It was a great experience and well worth it, I will probably not miss another for awhile. The chance to talk to my peers face to face was outstanding and a rare oppurtunity.
I learned lot of useful information about tools people are using, the strategies for large seo campaigns, and what people are asking for. I walk away convinced that we are entering an era where the punters without good in house tools are going to start dropping off the map.
Matt Cutts dances to Graywolfs Tune
I thought that Matt Cutts show was entertaining and useless all at the same time. To me it was obvious that he came with a message he wanted to present and thats what he was pushing. The Matt Cutts joy ride consisted of the “Don’t buy back links” mantra [ what ever Matt ] and “there is no sandbox but it looks like one” [ whats the difference for me then ? ]. Matt also danced a good jig on about why a major network can interlink and a smaler one can’t, unbeknownst to me the music was play by the famous bandmaster GrayWolf. For the record I think Matt all in all is honest but during the conference he really didn’t do much other than spout the “we know about some link networks”.
People Talk to Much, People don’t talk enough
I thought the best part of the conference was eavesdropping on the question and answer session after each session. This is were people mob the rich and famous speakers after they speak and drop their panties for them in an effort to get great advice and exposure. If you were talking to Jake Baillie after most of his sessions you may have seen me. I was the guy sitting quietly in the front row with a laptop writing down all your information, lesson… watch what you say in a public place, many of you shared too much.
Conversley I found it odd how many people were reticent to mingle with others and share information. At the Yahoo drink gala many people were missing the oppurtunity to chat and were very gaurded. That wasn’t the case for all because I met some really cool people.
Panelist of different backgrounds
The panalists were of several different backgrounds and I was a bit suprised by this. I expected to see hard core seo’s that knew what they were doing at every single one, this wasn’t the case though. At first it was a little disconcerting then I saw that the panelists complemented one another. Some of the more advanced panelists skipped assumed knowledge that the less expereinced audeince members didn’t know and the less technical panelists tended to be more knowledgable about business topics.
All in all
All in all great event. Learned a lot and met some great people :-)
