I wonder, Should I optimize for Google ?

Just a quick thought before I run off to bed.

Since I have been registering domains in bulk the last few days it occurred to me that I have to potentially deal with the Google sandbox. I was pretty upset at first, I would have to settle for 40% of the traffic on the internet. Further more the techniques I use to optimize for Google are not the best for MSN and Yahoo.

Then the thought occurred to me. I won’t have to worry ( for SEO ) as much about the Google of now since I am locked out; I only need to consider where Google will be in a year.

Do I think Google will be worth most of my optimization in a years time ? Should I solely focus on the other engines ?

Well lets look at the signs:

  • Google is rapidly ( some would say frantically ) seeking to diversify its product base. Meaning there will be less focus on search
  • MSN search is on the rise, my own results have shown they are around 15%
  • Yahoo is making a big push in other markets to compete with Google, their search traffic remains the same
  • Yahoo & Amazon are polluting the web via API’s in huge ways. That are only going to make it seem like the #1 leader is doing a poorer job.
  • Microsoft is mobilized and has a huge war chest
  • Google has huge public relations disasters on the way via court cases and privacy issues

None of these are good for google and leads me to believe that their share of the volume of search is going to decrease, perhaps dramatically so by the time I am out of the sandbox.

So perhaps the sandbox has a silver lining. I can focus on what is going to make me rank well in Yahoo and MSN today. And since Google is going to have a smaller share of the search market in a years time it may make for a good long term move as well. So I guess Google will get less of my attention now.

And really in the end isn’t that what Google wanted anyways ?
