These are just some notes for me, and I guess you now, about referer spam.

- Referer spam is a technique to increase your backlinks to your site by falsifying the referer header portion. This will cause it to be listed in by the target websites statistics package. If the stats package is in the open on the web then you will have a backlink.

- Simple solution for this problem is to modify all stats packages to use the ref=’nofollow’ tag.

- Some people report that a referer spam tactic is to run the “attack” and have the webpage that it is pointing to display a message saying that the spammer was reported and removed. Then at a later date replace the message with information.

- A tactic would probably be to include sites not owned by the spammer to muddy the issue as to the source.

- The usual target industries are the “sin” industries & loans. It would be more effective if you targeted outside these industries.

- The spammer usually uses short urls consisting of hyphenated keyword for the filename.

- Obviously they are using proxies also.

- Since this form of spam is getting a lot of attention lately it is likely to be taken care of soon visa via the no follow solution.

- A smarter referer spam tactic would be to only hit sites that are actually related to your topic
